An Organized Move

We're moving! Yikes! I haven't done that in 16 years!!!
So I turned to My Super Smart Network of Friends for advice on the best way to tackle this crazy thing.
Here's the advice that they gave me.
Begin packing the least important things first and number the boxes as you go, labeling each one for the room it's going into at the new place.
Keep a list of the boxes, by number, with notes about what room it goes to and what's in it. I just went with general info. I don't have time to be too specific.
And then pack your little heart out. Because a LOT of stuff accumulates in 16 years.
I'm also keeping all the important items pertaining to the move in a 3 ring binder. I keep that and the packing supplies all together so I can be prepared to pack whenever I get a few minutes to spare. I know exactly where to find this paper or that paper (Oh the paperwork involved in selling and buying a house!! oy!!) at a moment's notice.
The idea behind this system of packing is that I will pack the most important stuff from each room last, so those boxes will have the highest numbers. When we get all the boxes distributed to the rooms in the new house, we'll know that the boxes within that room with the highest numbers are most important and should be unpacked first. And if we are desperately searching for one specific thing, the list should help us locate it.
I'll let you  know how it works out in a few weeks. ;)
I've purposely put off packing any of Jaxon's things yet. I was afraid he'd be in a panic about being without his toys till we move. But now he's seeing me pack up everything else and beginning to panic that we aren't taking his toys. LOL So I guess I'll start packing up his things in the next day or two.
Did you notice that most of the boxes so far are marked "Craft Room"?

In my defense, I'm marking all boxes of home decor for the craft room. I figure that's a good place to land them all till we decide where we want things to go. Not that there isn't a lot of actual craft room stuff. Ha! But not quite as much as the pictures might make it seem.
Speaking of the craft room... here's a sneak peak at the new one!

It will be used exclusively for my ~CREATIVE~ space. Hooray!!! I can't wait!!! I already have big plans for it. It will probably be the first room I really put together. That makes sense, right? I mean, I NEED that creative space to be inspired to decorate the new house and truly make it our home. :)
My big plans include making these shelve (there are 5 of them) from my current craft room look less industrial and more beautiful.
Stay tuned! It shouldn't be too much longer. ;)

Linking up to this party because not blogging is making me crazy!

Thanks for stopping by my blog! Good luck on your move. My dad was in the military so we moved every couple of years. Since I got married we have moved even more (because we were in school and job transfers and what not). Now we are finally "settled". We have been in out current home for 3 years and it is the longest I have ever lived anywhere!

It sounds like you have a really great system going. The only thing I can add is to make sure you have bedding, and clothing available immediately. It also really helps to make a "special box" for the kiddos that gets unpacked immediately. It should contain anything that would make them feel more at home while you are making the transition. Good luck!

You have a great system going. I LOVE being organized when I move. I did something really similar. I spent most the moving day at the old house. By the time I got to the new house at the end of day my MIL and SIL's had a lot of the stuff already un-packed and put away. It was FABULOUS! Of course I re-arranged stuff after a few weeks, but being prepared to move is the best. It makes things go so much smoother.

And I am totally jealous of your new craft room. I dream about that a photography studio.

Looks like you have a great start on the packing and a great system. Aww, I feel for your little guy. I can't wait to see your new craft room. It's going to be incredible to have a space of your own. Thanks for linking to We're Organized Wednesday.

What a smart way to pack! Sure beats the way my Hubby does it. He just shoves things in black trash bags. One move he threw away everything from my whole spice cabinet!

Before I read all the way thru I was gonna say, "Boy, that's a lotta Craft Room boxes!" lol ;) You CAN go with this very organized way of moving...OR... You can go with MY System: Throw out every bit of junk that you can that has accumulated in nearly 20 yrs and throw everything else in plastic reusable bins in a mad panic to get out of the house before deadline day!!! Good Luck! Looks like you're doing great so far! xo *Mel

Hey Trish,
I was smiling to come across your blog. The timing is great as we get ready to move too. It is SO NOT fun! I will have to take some of your ideas on tracking everything and put them to good use. Pick up your blog award and have fun moving!

Ugh, moving. I am not a big fan of packing things up, but when unpacking I feel like it is Christmas morning! I hope the rest of the move goes smoothly for you

This is too fun!! I too am an OCD organizer!!! When we move (and it has been often) I label each room with a different color marker! I make labels ahead of time on my printer marking the room (Bedroom #1, #2 etc) the ink on the labels match the color marker I am using in each room. I also make signs for each room (Color coordinated of course) so that those helping with the move know which room each box goes too. When we get to the house, I tape the signs to the door of each room. Having moved MANY times, movers love me!

One more comment, I use the LIFO method. Last in/First out.

Box of towels and linens last in- first out along with Vaccum cleaner and cleaning supplies. Those items go with me in my car!
