Our Fourth

We can see a few different fireworks displays from our back deck and that is how we've been watching fireworks for the past few years. Since Jaxon was born it just seemed too much of a hassle to have him out that late and actually go to a display anywhere. But this year I thought he'd be okay with it and *I* really wanted to go somewhere and be right under the fireworks, feel the ground shake and all.
Since we're trying to be frugal, the major displays were out of the budget. But I found out that The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band was having a concert out at the Tooele High football field with fireworks afterwards. Perfect! Although, I'm sad for TNGDB that their star has fallen so far that they are performing at high school football fields now. Oh well, lucky for us!
The stage was nothing to shout about but you can't deny that they had a GORGEOUS backdrop.

For our out of state family, Tooele is on the other side of the mountains closest to our house. They're a lot prettier from that side, huh?

We listened to some great music and saw the moon rise over the mountains. It was a beautiful night. A nice breeze was blowing. There was a strange absence of bugs. I realized when we got home that I didn't have a single mosquito bite. Weird.

I bought the kids some glow stick necklaces to play with. They weren't much into the music.
Jaxon used his necklace as a steering wheel all the way home. Even as he dozed off he was holding the necklace up and making gentle motions to "keep it between the lines". And he would make very careful turns just AFTER Roger would make a turn in the truck. He got us home safely. ;)

Emily entertained herself by taking a few self portraits.

It was a really good night. The fireworks display was a lot better than I expected for such a small venue. Jaxon loved laying on the grass and watching the fireworks. He couldn't figure out why the booming sounds were coming from so many different directions as the noise ricocheted off the mountains.
After the show we got home in about 20 minutes. We can't get home from our hometown fireworks (only a few miles away) that fast for all the traffic!
After we put Jaxon to bed we even caught the end of some local displays from the back deck. Which made me remember watching them 2 years ago with Roger's family. They were here with us that year under the saddest of circumstances. I hope we can enjoy some holidays with them in happier times soon. My sweet sister in law, Jenny, gets fireworks on her birthday every year! Lucky girl!
Happy Birthday Jenny!

Thanks Trish, I had a nice birthday. We were just talking about us watching fireworks off your deck a couple of years ago. Under the sad circumstances that we were under, you guys really gave me a nice birthday that I won't forget. Man I would love to have another one the those cakes. It was yum-o!!! One of my all time favorite b-day cakes.
